On Saturday, October 12, The
Jim & Lance
Show participated in our first
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event in Flint, MI. This event is
another event sponsored by the American Cancer Society in their diligent battle
against Cancer. The event took place on the ground of the Flint Institute
of Arts. While the Relay for Life benefits cancer research in general,
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer focuses on - what else - breast
cancer. We also learned that, while not nearly as often as women do, MEN
get breast cancer as well.

It was a cold foggy morning, that of October 12, 2002
when Jim & Lance arrived to set up for their participation in their
first Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. The cold wasn't
so bad, but the dark (it WAS 5:30AM) was a bit of an obstacle, yet hour
heroes prevailed.
The crowd begins to grow as the walkers -- some 4,300 of them
-- arrive before the walk actually begins. The center picture is
our group doing some of the Group Dances that The
Jim & Lance
Show are so famous for. At
7:30 in the morning we had them doing the Cha-Cha Slide! How's
THAT for a warm-up?
On the left the crowd listens to the opening remarks
made by Barb Laskey (not pictured) and a number of other key team
members. In the center are Taryn Asher (Channel 12 News), Chris
Pavelich & Rod Prahin from Cars 108 (WCRZ) and key speaker Vicki
Girard. On the right the crowd gathers under the double balloon
arch for the cutting of the ribbon to begin the walk.
The photos above depict the enormous amount of people
present for this event. They move from the right across the
confines of the area. We tried to show just how many people were
involved, but ultimately the camera couldn't do justice to the amount of
people or the energy present that morning.
Above left and center are The Steelheads, a steel-drum
band from the Flint Institute of Arts. The played while the
walkers returned from their walk. The first walkers returned about
45 minutes after they left the starting line (read that: Balloon
Arch). On the right is Jim enjoying the sounds of this awesome
group of musicians. They played Steely Dan, Carlos Santana, Stevie
Wonder, and many others.
These photos are of the walkers returning from their 3.5
mile walk. A quick calculation determines that with 4,300 walkers
each going 3.5 miles, the total miles walked in this event was
15,050! WOW! The total money raised for this event was over $240,000!
